Pro Kart Indoor and Best Buy Team Up For United Way
On September 30,2003 Best Buy teamed up with Pro Kart Indoors and hosted a fund raising event for United Way. I would say it was a huge success. We all donated to participate. The entry list grew to approx. 80 individuals employed with Best Buy. It was held at Pro Kart Indoors in Blaine, Minnesota.
Our starting positions were based on how we signed up. I was lucky enough to find out about the event early and signed up to compete in heat 4, pole sitter. The winner of each heat race automatically advanced to the semi-finals. The remaining had to race to place. There were three semi-final heats. The top 4 from each heat earned a spot in the finals. The starting grid for the final race was determined by the fastest times in the semi-finals.
I was the fastest on the track with a lap time of 34.56 sec. We had our drivers meeting and drew our kart numbers for the final race. We then went back to the track got in our karts and began the race.
The green flag dropped and the final race began. Twelve drivers, twenty laps and only three trophies. I wanted first place very badly. So I floored it. I came into turn one. Into the wall I went. Lost the pole position right away. As I continued I was thinking wow these brakes are not so good, how was I going to adapt. I really want that trophy. So I continued to floor it. Each and every turn I ended up in the wall till lap 5. I ended up in the tires. Stuck, the track Marshall had to come and pull me out. I was then in 7th place. I continued to drive as fast as that little Kart would go. I then slowly started adjusting to the the kart and started gaining my positions back. Lap 9, I had gotten back to position # 6, then Lap 10, I was # 5, by lap 12, I made it back to # 4, and lap 14, I was in 3rd place. Slowly moving up the pack, then the white flag dropped and I gave it my all and finished the race in third.
I want to thank Best Buy and Pro Kart Indoors for hosting this event and making it such a great experience.
